Local church to offer 50-day 'survivor' course in February

Friday, December 28, 2001

New course to focus on methods to help members of congregation find new ways to thrive spiritually in 2002.

The members of the Church of Christ of Alta are planning to become more than survivors for eight weeks - planning to explore what it takes to thrive spiritually in these challenging days.

To achieve this, they will be working together on a 50-day spiritual adventure called More than Survivors: What it Takes to Thrive Spiritually.

The 50-day spiritual adventure will take place from Sunday, Feb. 10 through March 31, and participants at the Church of Christ, one of thousands of congregations across North America who will be addressing this same topic, will work daily through Adventure Journals, studying scriptures and applying lessons through application exercises.

The More than Survivors course is an annual all-church spiritual growth series created by Mainstay Church Resources, dedicated to renewing the church by helping pastors and everyday believers create unforgettable Sunday services.

Created in 1980, more than 4.6 million people have participated in the series over the past 21 years, and the Adventure has also been used in India, Nepal, South America and Europe.

Over 400,000 Christians worldwide are expected to participate in the program during 2002, which was developed with input from pastors and laypeople across the country.

During the upcoming series, participants will be looking at eight different ways to thrive spiritually today.

The eight methods include practicing making soul-conscious choices, fleeing all-too-convenient evil, rallying support to shine for God, rebuilding sacred walls that protect, referencing the culture to share God's love, staying alert to self-diminishing compromises, risking everything for God and His People and fixing their eyes on Eternity with Jesus.

Rick Bender, the pastor of the Church of Christ, said he was looking forward to the congregation and other members of the Alta community becoming involved in the program.

"I'm delighted the Church of Christ can be a part of this exciting series," Bender said. "In today's world, it's easy for our Christian values to weaken and for us to be assimilated into the culture without making a positive impact. As Christ's representatives, we must dare to be different and become more than just survivors."

In addition to hearing weekly sermons on each of the topics, participants in the course will also journal each day, and will use those journals to chart their spiritual growth.

Daily applications will also help them learn to apply what they have learned in practical ways.

Bender said anyone wishing to join the Church of Christ for the series can call 712-200-2321 or visit the church building at 505 West Highway in Alta.
