The Iowa Department of Natural Resources gave five 40-pound rare cygnet trumpeter swans to the local swan restoration program Monday.

The young birds will remain on the Storm Lake pond until spring and will then be set free to migrate. The birds were hatched at the Grotto at West Bend. The conservation board officially named the pond site as the Buena Vista Swan Restoration Refuge this week. Shown are swan committee past chairman Mark Kirkholm, new chair MIke Griggs, and DNR officers Dave Hoffman and Chris Lloyd at Monday's release.
