BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP - St. Mary's trips Sac City; N-F clips S-C

SAC CITY - Joe Fitzgerald scored 21 points and Eric Wordekemper chipped in 15 to help send Storm Lake St. Mary's to a 60-46 win over Sac City on Tuesday night at Sac City.

St. Mary's led 15-12 after the first quarter before extending to a 36-19 halftime lead. It was 46-31 heading into the fourth period.

Kyle Drey scored eight points and collected 15 rebounds for the Panthers, now 2-2 overall. Matthew Smith added seven points and 13 rebounds.

Wordekemper and Nick Brown each grabbed five rebounds. Wordekemper handed out six assists, Tim Brown four, and Drey and Smith three each.

St. Mary's was 23 of 46 from the field for 50 percent. Sac City was 17 of 54 for 32 percent. The Panthers outrebounded the Indians 46-24.

Newell-Fonda 80

Schaller-Crestland 72

Jason Ripke poured in 25 points to lead five players in double figures as Newell-Fonda, ranked seventh in Class 1A, dispatched Schaller-Crestland in Northwest Conference play on Tuesday night at Newell.

Newell-Fonda jumped out to a 24-17 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs led 42-36 at halftime and 56-53 after three periods of play.

Eric Johnson, Bryce Edwards and Matt Stauter all scored 12 points. Jared Daniel added 10. Johnson cleared eight rebounds, Edwards and Kurt Olsen seven each, and Daniel six.

Daniel handed out seven assists and Beau Artist five. Ripke charted four steals and Daniel three.

Jason Pyle scored 20 points for Schaller-Crestland. Marcus Malcom and Jim Alesch each had 15, while Nathan Johnson added 10.

Newell-Fonda made 30 of 63 field goals for 48 percent. The Wildcats were 28 of 62 for 45 percent.

"This was another big win for us in the conference," Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos said. "We worked hard for this one. We're going to have to continue to improve. We gave up too many offensive rebounds to them and we also didn't cover our weak side low post players on the dump downs. It's a good thing when you can win and you still have room for improvement."

Alta 71, Sioux Central 60

Jared Johnson poured in 21 points to lead four players in double figures as Alta got past Sioux Central in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday night at Alta.

Eric Holton scored 16 points for Alta, while Brad Bunjes added 12 and Heath Glienke 10.

Bunjes cleared 10 rebounds, Glienke eight and Johnson seven. Holton handed out five assists, while Glienke, Bunjes and Josh Droegmiller all had two apiece.

Alta made 20 of 56 field goals for 36 percent. Sioux Central was 19 of 53 for 36 percent.

Galva-Holstein 58

Aurelia 54

Lucas Schossow poured in 19 points and David Cronin added 13 as Galva-Holstein upended Aurelia on Monday night at Aurelia.

Galva-Holstein, now 3-0 overall, trailed 9-8 after the first quarter, but led 27-26 at halftime. It was tied at 43-43 entering the fourth period.

Aurelia led 54-51 with 4 minutes to play before the Pirates ended the game by scoring seven unanswered points.

The difference in the game was free throw shooting. Galva-Holstein made 17 of 26 free throws to Aurelia's 2 of 4.

"We just put them on the free throw line way too many times," Aurelia coach Jim Demers said. "We didn't score in the last 4 minutes of the game."

Heath Brecher led Aurelia with 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Kasey Reilly added 16 points and five assists, while Eric Sonksen contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Bill Weathers had six rebounds and two assists, while Dan Beatty charted four steals.

Aurelia made 24 of 56 field goals for 43 percent. Galva-Holstein was 19 of 48 for 40 percent.
