PREP WRESTLING - Two SL wrestlers finish second

Tuesday, December 11, 2001

EMMETSBURG - Dylan Wagener and Jared Ponsor each placed second at their respective weight classes to help Storm Lake finish sixth in the Emmetsburg Invitational on Saturday.

Emmetsburg won the meet with 266 points. Storm Lake scored 85. Eight teams participated.

Wagener lost by decision 9-5 to Emmetsburg's Jacob Naig in the finals at 130 pounds. Wagener pinned Dan Krienert of LeMars in 1 minute, 47 seconds and Mike Zinnel of Humboldt in 3:03 in the first two rounds.

Ponsor lost by decision 7-2 in the finals at 160 to Emmetsburg's Nick Ohrtman. Earlier, Ponsor won by decision 11-2 over Fort Dodge's Josh Mikesell and 3-0 over Matt Gabel of LeMars.

Pete Harder placed fourth at 135 pounds. He lost by decision 5-4 to Battle Creek-Ida Grove's Jake Hasbrouck in the third place match. Harder won by pin in 1:30 over Mitch Fridolfson of Humboldt and lost by pin in 3:23 in the semifinals.

Justin Koeppe placed fourth at 140 pounds. He was defeated by pin in 2:30 in the third-place match. Koeppe won by pin in 1:34 and lost by pin in 1:10 in earlier rounds.

George Romualdo also took fourth at 145 pounds. He was defeated by pin in 3:45 in the third-place match. Romualdo won by pin in 2:26 in the first round and lost by pin in 1:44 in the semifinals.

"The kids who placed for us really did wrestle well and had a good day," Storm Lake coach Ty Seaman said. "Both Dylan and Jared wrestled well to get to the finals and also showed some good things in their losses in the finals to really good kids. Dylan wrestled a four-point match with a state champion from last year and was really close to scoring a couple more times."

"We also had some kids who just weren't mentally ready to wrestle and that was disappointing to see," Seaman added. "We have talked a lot about being ready to wrestle and at times we weren't."

"Overall, I think we still showed some progress and we will work real hard the next two weeks before break to keep getting better each time out on the mat."

Sibley-Ocheyedan Tourney

Matt Gustafson and Brian Borchers captured individual titles to help AGH finish fifth in the Sibley-Ocheyedan Tournament on Saturday.

Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn won the meet with 205.5 points. AGH scored 121. Alta was 10th with 81 points.

Gustafson won the 130-pound finals match by pin in 5:05 over West Lyon's Nick Koch. Borchers won his finals match at 275 by pin in 1:19 over Dean Binder of MMC.

Kelly Kannegeiter placed second at 215, losing by injury default to Shawn Morris of Lakeland in the finals.

Joey Galvin beat Alta's Corey Diischer 5-3 in overtime to place third at 125. Jon Seaton finished fifth at 103 pounds, as did Eric Conover at 119. Seaton won by pin in 52 seconds and Conover won by pin in 53 seconds.

Zach Regennitter placed sixth at 145, as did Scott Radke at 171.

"The kids competed well and gave a good effort throughout the day," AGH coach Scott Phelps said. "We lost a lot of close matches where we made little mistakes to beat ourselves. A lot of that is because of the inexperience of our kids. These mistakes are correctable mistakes that we will take care of as the season progresses."
