BV women win going away; swim teams fall

STORM LAKE - Kelli Taylor scored 11 points to lead four players in double figures as Buena Vista routed Martin Luther College 71-51 on Saturday at Siebens Fieldhouse.

Buena Vista jumped out to a 38-25 lead at the half and outscored Martin Luther 33-26 in the second half.

Buena Vista made 25 of 67 field goals in the game for 37 percent. Martin Luther was 20 of 64 for 31 percent.

Rebounding proved to be the telling tale. Buena Vista cleared 61 of them to Martin Luther's 35. The Beavers were also 18 of 29 from the free-throw line to just 8 of 17 for Martin Luther.

Amy Meggers, Allison Schultz and Jessica Jensen all scored 10 points apiece for the Beavers, now 3-3 overall.

Kristina Kapler cleared nine rebounds, Julie Bloyer eight and Meggers six. Schultz, Jensen and Taylor all had five rebounds apiece.

Meggers and Taylor each handed out three assists, while Jensen charted four steals.

Buena Vista plays at Central on Friday night.

Swimming & Diving

Mandy Peter, Sara Becker, Kelsey Stribe and Matt Umphress all finished first individually to lead Buena Vista in a dual meet against South Dakota State University on Saturday.

South Dakota State won the men's meet 112-59 and took the women's meet 95-92.

Peter won the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.12 seconds. Becker took the 100 freestyle in 57.12 seconds and Stribe claimed the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 7.59 seconds. Umphress won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.05.

Two relay teams also placed first. The women's 200 medley unit of Stribe, Amy Brown, Amelia Anders and Becker posted a time of 2:03.53. The 200 freestyle tandem of Anders, Stribe, Peter and Becker were clocked in 1:53.20.

Placing second for the Beavers were Nelson Hayes in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 13:01.10, Brown in the 200 freestyle in 2:28.88 and the 100 breast stroke in 1:18.09, Becker in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.76, Anders in the 100 butterfly in 1:16.29, Liza Radke in the 500 freestyle in 6:51.12 and Robyn Anders in the 100 breast stroke in 1:10.81.

Finishing third were Umphress in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.21, Jaime Soczek in the 200 freestyle in 2:49.41, Radke in the 50 freestyle in 30.72 seconds, Robyn Anders in the 50 freestyle in 24.48 seconds, Rachel Bossow in the 100 backstroke in 1:34.87, Hayes in the 500 freestyle in 6:12.96 and Peter in the 100 breast stroke in 1:23.38.

Three relay teams also took third. The men's 200 medley team of Umphress, John Roberts, Robyn Anders and Ames Molsberry were timed in 1:56.12. The women's 200 freestyle unit of Radke, Bossow, Trisha Chamberlain and Soczek posted a time of 2:13.12. The men's 200 freestyle tandem of Umphress, Molsberry, Hayes and Anders finished in 1:43.87.

Collecting fourth-place finishes included Bossow in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:51.93, Molsberry in the 200 freestyle in 2:37.65 and the 100 freestyle in 1:05.45, Chamberlain in the 50 freestyle in 33.88 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:14.43, Soczek in the 100 breast stroke in 1:30.38 and Roberts in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:14.44.

Jeremy Cook was fifth in the 50 freestyle in 30.0 seconds, while Roberts was sixth with a time of 30.68.
