New postal system routes funds from SL to Mexico

Monday, November 26, 2001

Dinero Seguro, an international funds transfer service to Mexico offered by the U.S. Postal Service, now is available to customers in Storm Lake.

"Dinero Seguro offers the Hispanic community a fast, safe and reliable way to transfer money to Mexico," said Postmaster Todd Oxley. "Postal money orders have long been a favorite way for people to send money to friends and relatives in Mexico. Dinero Seguro provides and electronic alternative that reduces the time that it takes to receive the funds from days to just 15 minutes."

For a fee, customers can send any amount up to $2,000 per transaction simply by filling out a form and presenting it at the post office counter. Identification is required for transfers in excess of $1000.

Dinero Seguro uses direct transfers between the Postal Service and 2,300 branch offices of Bancomer, one of the leading retail banking institutions in Mexico. Other funds transfer services use intermediaries that often tack on additional fees.

"Customers trust the security the Postal Service provides," said Oxley, "and they appreciate that all fees are clearly stated and that there will be no extra currency conversion charges for their relatives in Mexico."

Dinero Seguro previously was available at 870 Post Offices in California, Texas and the Chicago area, but the service is being expanded this summer to 2,000 additional locations in 35 states.

The service is available locally at the Storm Lake Post Office, 509 Cayuga Street.
