BV slips past Dubuque in home finale

STORM LAKE - Carlos Martinez kicked three field goals to move within four of the NCAA Division III all-time record as Buena Vista got past Dubuque 16-15 in an Iowa Conference game on Saturday at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

Martinez kicked a field goal in each of the first two quarters as Buena Vista and Dubuque played to a 6-6 tie at the half. Martinez booted a 26-yarder and a 40-yarder.

Dubuque went ahead 6-3 in the first quarter on a 33-yard TD pass from Matthew Rear to Lenny Delanci.

Dubuque went ahead 12-6 in the third quarter when Bryan Kuehn caught a 65-yard TD pass from Rear.

Buena Vista regained the lead at 13-12 on a 2-yard run by Barry Van Voorst. Martinez added the extra point.

Each team kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter. Dubuque went ahead 15-13 on a 24-yarder and Martinez gave the Beavers the lead for good with a 28-yard field goal with 6:13 remaining.

Buena Vista finished the game with 382 yards in total offense, including 149 rushing. Craig Rowedder rushed for 93 yards on 15 carries. Van Voorst picked up 36 yards on the ground.

Eric Jamison completed 7 of 13 passes for 108 yards. Josh Espinosa caught three passes for 65 yards.

J.D. Kucera had seven tackles and Andy Hodges six for the Beavers.

Buena Vista, now 4-4 in the league and 5-4 overall, finishes the season this Saturday at Wartburg.
