G-H has seven players on all-district team

STORM LAKE - Seven players from Class A District 1 champion Galva-Holstein were selected to the all-district football team, it was released.

Running back Scott Breyfogle, quarterback Matt Egger, tight end Mike Modrell, offensive linemen Matt Otto and Bryan Anfinson, linebacker Scott Radke and defensive lineman Elijah Kastner were all selected to the first team.

All are seniors except for Kastner and Egger.

Breyfogle rushed for 1,311 yards and 12 touchdowns this season for the Pirates, who finished 8-2 and made the playoffs. Breyfogle was also the leading receiver with 18 catches for 465 yards and eight touchdowns.

Egger, who was also chosen as the all-district first team punter, completed 39 of 77 passes for 841 yards and 13 touchdowns. Modrell caught eight passes for 136 yards and two TDs. Kastner made 47 tackles, including four tackles for loss, and Radke had 107.

Newell-Fonda had five players named to the first team. They included running back Dustin Sievers, offensive linemen Kyle Doonan and Nels Overgaard, linebacker John Witt and defensive end Jason Ripke.

Schaller-Crestland running back Kelly Rydberg was selected to the team. The senior rushed for 1,282 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Wildcats this season. He also led the the team in tackles with 113.

Joining Rydberg were offensive lineman Jeff Toomer, defensive lineman Branden Scadden and defensive back Evan Johnson. Scadden had 40 tackles and Johnson made 60.

Alta had three players selected in linebacker Josh Droegmiller, defensive lineman Matt Page and defensive end Blake Huseman.

Named to the second team were offensive linemen Brian Borchers and David Cronin of Galva-Holstein; offensive lineman Brian Baskerville and defensive back Jared Daniel of Newell-Fonda; linebacker David Bloyer and offensive lineman Nelson Weber of Schaller-Crestland; and running back Eric Hanson and defensive back Dru Leyden of Alta.

Galva-Holstein coach Brad Knight was voted the district coach of the year by his peers.
