A memorial service for the late Buena Vista University student Andy Gasaway will take place on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus.
Gasaway passed away at the age of 22 on Oct. 9 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Gasaway was born in Mason City, the son of Joan A. (Hess) and Michael J. Gasaway. At birth, he was diagnosed with heart and other physical disabilities, and he battled through numerous surgeries during his lifetime.
After graduating from Newman Catholic High School in Mason City, Gasaway enrolled at Buena Vista University. He was a member of the debate team, and soon his knowledge of issues and intensity earned him the nickname "Mad Dog," a title he wore with great pride. He was named president of Pierce Hall and was elected to the BVU Student Senate during the spring of 2001.
Gasaway had looked forward to representing his classmates as a school senator this fall, but when he was unable to return for his senior year due to hospitalization, BVU students and administrators conferred upon him the title of "Honorary Secretary."
Gasaway was awaiting a heart transplant at the time of his death.
The public is invited to join the BVU community at the memorial service in celebration and remembrance of Gasaway's life.
