John D. Mahoney, 51, currently of Urbandale and formerly of Boone, passed away at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Services will be Friday morning, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Father Clem Currans officiating.
Interment with full military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Bluff Creek Cemetery northwest of Boone.
Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone tonight, Nov. 1, from 4-9 p.m. and Friday morning at the Stark-Welin Chapel from 8-10 a.m.
A vigil service will be tonight at 7 p.m. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone.
The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel from 6:30-8 p.m. to greet friends.
John D. Mahoney was born on April 13, 1950, in Oelwein, the son of Hugh and Lillian (Smock) Mahoney.
On May 3, 1975, he married Betty Goedert at Varina.
John was a 1968 graduate of Starmont High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973. He was employed as a millwright with local #2158 while living in Moline, Ill. The couple moved to Boone where he had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Ames.
He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart. He enjoyed day trading and fishing.
His daughter, Katherine and father, Hugh, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Melissa Claude and her husband Aaron of Pilot Mound; two sons, John B. Mahoney and Mark Mahoney both of Boone; two grandsons, Riley and Jarret Claude both of Pilot Mound; his mother, Lillian Mahoney of Marion; one sister, Carol Crawford and her husband Philip of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
