Standing strong in a new location

Thursday, November 1, 2001

An old location is seeing a new life in Storm Lake, as L&G Products, Inc. moves into the old DeKalb plant on the east side in August.

The company is owned by Marty Peck and his mother-in-law Marian Buckendahl. L&G Products is a wholesale distributor of lawn and garden products.

L&G Products had been a division of Consumer Supply. It was up for sale last year, when Peck, who had managed the division for nine years, decided to purchase it with Buckendahl.

Now eight employees work for L&G, which distributes mainly to family-owned garden centers, greenhouses and landscapers. Cities, schools and golf courses are also customers. Peck estimated L&G Products has about 1,300 active customers throughout Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota, as well as parts of Kansas and Missouri.

Starting in August more than 75 truckloads of supplies and merchandise were moved to the new location over three weeks. "With our employees' help, we didn't have to close at all during the move," Peck said.

A lot of work came with the old plant, which was built in 1939. Buckendahl praised all of the area contractors who worked on the project. "They were dedicated to help us meet our deadline," she said.

The employees have also found a new friend - a stray cat who calls the old plant home and proudly strolls through the offices. "She walks around and makes sure she gets attention from everyone who comes through the door," Buckendahl said.

"A lot of people have told me they are glad to see the plant standing strong," Peck said. "Hopefully it will be that way for some time."
