Sanchez wins inaugural Buena Vista County Tobacco Prevention poster contest

Thursday, November 1, 2001

Eighth-grader Ivan Sanchez was honored in front of his classmates last week for winning the first annual Buena Vista Tobacco Prevention Poster Contest.

Sanchez was honored with a certificate by Buena Vista Public Nursing representative Bonnie Conley, and the young artist will also see his poster be made into book covers which will be given to every eighth grade student in Buena Vista County.

The contest, sponsored by the Buena Vista Tobacco Prevention Committee and the Iowa Department of Public Health, was open to eighth-graders from all school districts in the county.

The purpose of the contest was to increase awareness about the dangers of tobacco by allowing the students to creatively express their feelings on the issue.

Sanchez advanced to the county-wide contest by winning the contest at Alta, and a panel of judges then selected his drawing from the seven school-winning posters.

"Ivan's drawing was a good combination of message and art," Conley said at the presentation. "Ivan was very deserving of the award."

T.J. Aube was the second place winner from Alta.
