The 11th season of the Alta Church of Christ's flag football program concluded Sunday, Oct. 7, with a banquet for the players and their families at the church.
Following a meal which was enjoyed by everyone, Tom Lichter opened the program by singing the song "I'm Proud to be an American" as each team entered the sanctuary with their hand over their hearts. Eric Sauter then led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance which set the tone for the celebratory evening.
A special "Sportsmanship Award" was given to one player off of each team who demonstrated qualities from the league's three rules, which were to act like a Christian at all times, listen and obey and show respect to teammates, coaches and the church grounds.
Recipients for this year were Zach De Roos (Rough Riders), Michael Sefcik (Saints), Aaron Hansen (Intimidators) and Cody Nesbitt (Alta All-Stars).
Every player received a trophy at the banquet and each players was also part of the flag football highlight video.
The season was capped off by a nine-overtime championship game between the All-Stars and Intimidators, with the winning play coming from a quick slant pass from Cody Nesbitt to Jordan Hinkeldey.
In the consolation game, the Saints stunned the Rough Riders, who had beaten the Saints handily earlier in the season.
Organizers of the program thank the players, coaches, assistants, kitchen help and parents for their efforts. A special thank you goes out to Darell's Foodtown of Alta and Ray Kluver of Storm Lake for the meat donations and to Robin and Mike Miller of Alta for the use of their field for games.
