BV defense saves the day again

Tuesday, October 16, 2001

Beavers hold Upper Iowa to 133 yards of total offense in 14-0 win.

FAYETTE - Buena Vista scored touchdowns on its first two possessions to defeat Upper Iowa 14-0 Saturday at Eischeid Stadium in Fayette. The contest was the homecoming game for the Peacocks.

A strong wind and pouring rain slowed both teams offensively, although Buena Vista had two players each rush for more than 100 yards.

Craig Rowedder rushed 31 times for 116 yards and both Beaver touchdowns. Joe Pick carried the ball 14 times for 106 yards.

Granted it was raining and miserable, but that didn't take away from the performance of Buena Vista's defense. The Beavers held the Peacocks to only 53 yards rushing and 80 passing for a total of 133 yards in total offense. Buena Vista also held Upper Iowa to only five first downs and intercepted three passes.

Upper Iowa was unable to move the ball on the game's opening possession. Punting into the wind, Jeff Moody's punt traveled only three yards giving the ball to Buena Vista at the Peacock 26-yard line. Rowedder carried the ball on each of the Beaver's first four plays, the final carry resulting in a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Peacocks were again unable to move the ball and were forced to punt.

Buena Vista took a 14-0 lead following a 10-play, 39-yard drive. Rowedder carried the ball on eight of the 10 plays and scored from 2 yards out.

Upper Iowa was able to stop two BV drives in the second quarter. Nathan Munson intercepted a Eric Jamison pass in the end zone with 9:40 to play in the half. Upper Iowa gave the ball right back as quarterback Ben Jass was intercepted just over a minute later. Buena Vista advanced to the Peacock 4-yard line, but Rowedder fumbled into the end zone and Gene Blalock recovered for Upper Iowa.

Neither team threatened to score in the second half. Upper Iowa did not even move the ball into Buena Vista territory after halftime.

Rowedder and Pick accounted for 222 of Buena Vista's 251 yards on the ground. Jamison was an efficient 6 of 7 passing for 51 yards. He was intercepted once. The Beavers fumbled seven times in the game, but only lost one. Corey Brown led the Peacocks with 32 yards rushing on seven carries. Jass completed 9 of 22 passes for 80 yards.

J.D. Kucera, Chad Behrens and Keegan Pace led Buena Vista on defense with six tackles apiece.

Buena Vista, now 3-2 in the league and 4-2 overall, hosts Coe College this Saturday.
