The 20th Annual Crop Walk for Hunger will be Sunday, Oct. 14. Registration will be held at the church corners, 3rd Street and Lake Avenue at 1:30 p.m. The walk will begin at 2 p.m.
The two-mile walk will proceed from the church corner east on 3rd Street, and then will proceed south toward the lake and will wind its way back to Lakeside Presbyterian. Refreshments will be served to the walkers in the dining room of the Presbyterian Church when the walkers complete their walk.
The Storm Lake Crop Walk is one of 100 walks for hunger held across the state of Iowa. Eighty-two of Iowa's 99 counties will have a walk. Last year $532,973.61 was raised by these walks. The Storm Lake Crop Walk raised $4,500 from 134 walkers. The goal this year is for 150 walkers to raise $5,000.
Seventy-five percent is given to the Church World Service Hunger and Disaster Relief program and 25 percent for local programs. This year the committee has chosen to give 12.5 percent to the Food for Life program and 12.5 percent to the disaster relief for the victims in New York and Washington, D.C.
The Food for Life program began in 1983 and has received and distributed over 124,000 pounds of processed meat through the Storm Lake Upper Des Moines Opportunity office food pantry. The meat is distributed to those persons who qualify under the poverty guide lines for Buena Vista County.
Hogs and cattle are donated by local farmers. The animals are brought to the Food for Life receiving station at the Storm Lake Sale Barn and then members of Lakeside Presbyterian Church transport the animals to the Butcher Shop in Paullina where they are processed. The processed meat is then brought to be put in freezers at the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Office.
Each year 3,000,000 friends and neighbors across the country walk or sponsor a walker to help stop hunger. People of all ages are encouraged to join the walk. Several local churches are participating and you may get a sponsor sheet at your church or by calling Nancy Alderton, 732-1705, Storm Lake Crop Walk chairperson. If it is not possible to be a walker you may sponsor a walker. By your support we can make a difference for the 27,000 children under five who die every day from hunger and preventable diseases. Be a walker or sponsor a walker for the Storm Lake Crop Walk.
