Nationwide rallies will be celebrating Lights On Afterschool! calling attention to the importance of afterschool programs for our nation's children, families and communities.
At Storm Lake Middle School the lights will be on for the celebration on October 10 with an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. The school will be celebrating by inviting parents, community and business leaders, elected officials and volunteers to join in as students demonstrate what they do at TLC and show displays. The students will also be preparing sub sandwiches for a light meal.
The Tornado Learning Club began in March of 1999 as a recipient of a 21st Century Community Leaning Center grant to offer extended learning opportunities before and after school for middle school students. Students not only have opportunities for an extra three hours of assisted study each day, but they also receive nutritious snacks, time for recreation and/or computer and enrichment activities. In the 2000-01 school year over 300 student attended TLC at some times during the year, with almost 100 students attending regularity.
Join the TLC students and staff on Wednesday, October 10, for an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. to see for yourself what afterschool means. TLC needs everyone in the community to spend some time here showing our kids that you care about their future. Last year volunteers spent over 300 hours helping in TLC.
Lights On Afterschool! is a project of JC Penney and the Afterschool Alliance, a coalition of private, public and nonprofit entities committed to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable afterschool programs by the year 2010.
Special thanks to Fareway, Page's Bakery and McDonalds for donating supplies for the meal.
