Upper Iowa rallies past Dubuque for first win of the season

FAYETTE - Upper Iowa overcame a 15-0 first half deficit to defeat Dubuque 31-29 Saturday.

Both teams topped 240 yards rushing and 320 yards of total offense. Upper Iowa is now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Iowa Conference, while Dubuque fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the IIAC.

Dubuque got on the scoreboard first on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Rear to Bryan Kuehn late in the first quarter. Kicker Ryan Wolfram ran in a two-point conversion. The Spartans upped their lead to 15-0 on a 6-yard Chris Singletary run midway through the second quarter.

The defense got the Peacocks on the board as Homer Garza picked up a fumble and scampered 35 yards for a touchdown. A missed extra point kept the score 15-6. Antone Lopez kicked a 27-yard field goal with 24 seconds to play in the half to cut Dubuque's lead to 15-9.

Ben Jass connected with Mario Jones on a 49-yard scoring strike to give Upper Iowa a 16-15 lead. Dubuque answered right back as Rear hit Singletary with a 68-yard touchdown pass, handing the Spartans a 22-16 lead. Jass hit Corey Brown with two touchdown passes of 59 and 15 yards late in the third quarter to give UIU a 31-22 advantage.

Early in the fourth, a low snap on fourth down caused punter Jeff Moody to scramble and throw an interception. Damon Landrum picked it off and returned it 20 yards for the score. The Peacock lead was trimmed to 31-29.

Dubuque threatened again, but Rear fumbled deep in Peacock territory stalling a drive. The Spartans had the ball two more times but were stopped on fourth downs each time.

Jass finished 16 of 24 for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Fredette caught six passes for 43 yards. Corey Brown (90 yards), Mario Jones (78 yards) and Melvin Colvin (36 yards) each had three receptions. Brown also rushed 21 times for 27 yards on the ground. Rear completed 9 of 22 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Kuehn caught four balls for 116 yards and a score. Singletary rushed for 89 yards on 29 carries.

Upper Iowa will visit Wartburg this Saturday.
