Darrell Eugene Merkley, 73, a long-time South Sioux City resident, died on Monday, Sept. 24, at the Regency Square Nursing Home in South Sioux City.
At his request, there will be only a grave side service on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. in Schaller under the assistance of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Schaller. There will be no visitation. There will be military rites by the Schaller VFW Post No. 4704.
Darrell Eugene Merkley was born June 1, 1928, in Schaller to Glenn and Gladys (Hahne) Merkley. He graduated from Schaller High School.
In June, 1958, he married Mary Ann Davis in Elk Point, South Dakota. Darrell was a retired meatpacker from IBP in Dakota City. He served two terms in the US Navy, one of those terms in the Korean War.
Survivors include three sons, Darrell Glen Merkley and his wife, Terri of South Sioux City, Kevin Mark Merkley and his wife, Amy, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Chad Willis Merkley of Elk Point; one daughter, Brenda Alvarado of South Sioux City; three sisters, Lavon Dorsey of Osage, Glenadean Merkley of Worchester, Mass., and Donna Davis of Storm Lake; and six grandchildren.
Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a son Darwin Lee, and two grandchildren.
