Vincent Carl Benna, 80, of Storm Lake, died on September 25, 2001.
Funeral service was at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on September 28, with Pastor Douglas Haynes officiating. Interment was at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.
Vincent Carl Benna, son of Edith (Spar) and George Benna, was born in Albert City on June 26, 1921. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Vince grew up on a farm northeast of town and graduated from Albert City High School.
In 1942, Vince entered the armed forces. It was on his first furlough that he married Naomi Porath at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Newell (April 24, 1943). After he was discharged in 1945, he farmed in the Alta, Schaller, and Varina areas. Vince and his family were members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Newell. While there, he taught Sunday School, was a elder, sang in the church choir and was the best bell ringer they ever had.
In 1965, Vince and Naomi moved to a farm northwest of Storm Lake and became members of St. John Lutheran Church. He sang in the choir, and was the recording treasurer for many years.
He was preceded in death by three older brothers and two sisters.
Vince (Dad, Grampa, Great-Grandpa) loved his family, would fill a quiet moment by singing or whistling an old song, and had a knack for charming people with his wit.
He is survived by wife Naomi; his children, Denise and Dewey Betts of Alta, Dennis and Judy Benna of Fargo, N.D., Dana Benna of Storm Lake and T.R. and Sharon Benna of Nemaha; grandchildren, Kris and Jack Zimmerer of Sioux City, Justin Benna of Kahoka, Mo., Tiffany Benna and Bill Yakovac of Salmon, ID., Ky and Amy Betts, of Columbia, S.C., and Jenna and Jacey Benna, and great-granddaughters, Carrie, Katie, and Kelsie Zimmerer.
