Rev. Herbert L. Bryant has overcome many challenges to establish a second career as a religious author - at age 86.
Bryant retired from the ministry of the Iowa United Methodist Church in 1981, unable to continue preaching because Parkinson's Disease had caused his speech to slur.
He then took up his pen and started writing his memoirs, immediately followed by a book on the Old Testament. Both were published in 1995.
In 1999, he lost his eyesight, but continued to write. He has just published a new two-volume book of devotions, "True Greatness is Facing Life" - Book I and Book II. His first book-signing event takes place in Vinton October 18, where Rev. Bryant now resides at the Lutheran Care Facility.
He served as minister in Schaller and Arthur from 1961-1968. Prior to that, he had served in Nebraska, Florida, and several Iowa communities, as well as serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Army in the 1950s.
