Storm Lake youth tackles cemetery clean-up as he nears Eagle Scout status

Tuesday, October 2, 2001

Samuel Becker, son of Steven and Therese Becker of Storm Lake, has nearly completed the requirements necessary to earn his Eagle Scout Award.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is a very demanding standard and a worthy goal. The trail towards earning the Eagle Scout Award first requires you to earn the ranks of Star and Life, which requires you to earn a certain number of merit badges, accept a position of responsibility in your troop, and to be of service to your church and community. Samuel has fulfilled these requirements by earning the necessary 12 merit badges; plus many others in various areas. He has also held many of his troop's positions, including senior patrol leader, and given many hours of service to his church and community.

The last and highest rank of Boy Scouts is Eagle. This is the most important of the ranks and emphasizes skills of leadership, service, and the practice of good citizenship and ethical behavior of the highest order. Fewer than four percent of all Scouts earn the Eagle rank, a testament to it's high standards. Also needed to fulfill the requirements for an Eagle Scout award, the candidate must plan, develop, and show leadership in a project which will benefit a school, religious group or the community.

Samuel is completing his Eagle Scout project by organizing the Fall Cemetery clean-up at the St. Mary's Cemetery, and has built two boxes for the disposing of memorial flowers. The cemetery clean-up will take place Sunday, October 14th at 1:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come out, help, and congratulate Samuel on his accomplishments.

Besides scouting, Samuel, a straight A tenth grade student at St. Mary's High School, is a skilled musician. A piano student of Gwynn Gelach since second grade, he has participated in State Piano Contest four times. He has been taking violin lessons since third grade, plays in the SLHS orchestra, the Cherokee Symphony, and is trying out for All-State in October. Samuel also plays the trombone in band and has participated in Honor Band and contest. At his church, Samuel plays the organ, piano, and accompanies for school masses, the children's choir, and for special events at church and school. Besides instruments Samuel sings in the St. Mary's High School Choir. In addition to music, Samuel likes all sports and participates in track, does babysitting, is an Altar Server at the St. Mary's church, and participates in speech and drama at SMHS.

Samuel is a member of the Storm Lake Boy Scout Troop # 104. An Eagle Scout ceremony will be held to honor Samuel in the near future.
