Did you know that there are more than $8 billion worth of savings bonds that have stopped earning interest but haven't been cashed?
Could one of them belong to you?
Now, it's easy to find out. The Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants reports that Treasury Hunt, a new Internet-based service launched earlier this year by the Bureau of the Public Debt, makes it possible for you to find out if you have matured U.S. savings bonds. The service is also designed to find the rightful owners of bonds that the postal service couldn't deliver, as well as the recipients of unclaimed bond interest payments returned to the bureau of the Public Dept.
Simply go to the new Treasury Hunt data base at www.savingsbond.gov and input the information requested to begin a search. Remember to use the name and address information under which the bond was purchased. In addition to the search function, the Web site includes other useful tools, such as a savings bond calculator that computes the current value of your bonds.
