2A - F.D. St. Edmond 67, C.B. St. Albert 61

St. Albert's Matt Waters sank a pair of free-throws with 0.9 seconds left to send the game to overtime, but the Gaels of Fort Dodge St. Edmond held the Falcons scoreless in the extra period to hold on for the quarterfinal win in 2A action Tuesday afternoon.

The Gaels fell behind early, trailing St. Albert 20-13 after one and 34-22 at the half, but St. Edmond's would storm back in the second half as the lead changed hands 16 times in the game.

Jon Engler led the undefeated Gaels (26-0) with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Joey Flattery added 24 points and 10 boards. The Falcons (20-4) were led by Waters' 18 points.

St. Edmond's is back in action today at 3:45PM when they face Pella Christian (25-1).

Pella Christian 77, Sumner-Fredrick. 46

The Pella Christian Eagles are back in the Class 2A semifinals following their 77-46 rout of Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles jumped out to a 20-8 lead and never trailed.

Cliff Warner led Pella Christian (25-1) with 20 points and five assists. Eli Groenendyk added 16 points and six rebounds, and Jon Holwerda added 14 points. Clayton Boltz scored 16 points and pulled down nine boards to lead Sumner-Fredricksburg who wrap up their 2008-2009 campaign at 23-3 overall.

The 2009 Class 2A semifinals will have a familiar feel as all four teams that advanced also reached 2008's semis. The Eagles fell to Western Christian last year, and St. Edmond topped Solon. The pairings switched this season as Pella Christian faces St. Edmond at 3:45PM today.

3A - Bishop Heelan 69, New Hampton 36

The top-ranked Bishop Heelan Crusaders cruised into the Class 3A quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon, leading by as many as 40 as they thumped New Hampton 69-36.

Despite the duo sitting the majority of the fourth quarter, Heelan's Brennan Cougill finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while Zac McCabe finished with 17 and eight.

Jordan Moore paced New Hampton (17-7) with 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Crusaders continue their quest for the state crown, facing Carroll at 6:35PM tonight.

Carroll 56, Marion 55

Marion guard Kasey Semler's buzzer-beater attempt fell short as the Carroll Tigers were able to pull out the 56-55 quarterfinal win in Class 3A action Tuesday night.

The Tigers used a 20-7 third quarter to storm out in front, 42-31, but Marion countered with a 24-14 fourth quarter to claw back into contention.

Blake Haluska paced Carroll (21-3) with 16 points, five rebounds, and five blocks. Austin Brower added 14, including four threes, as the Tigers nailed eight from long range.

All-State guard Amry Shelby scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth to keep Marion (20-5) in the game.

Carroll will battle top-ranked Bishop Heelan in semifinal action tonight at 6:35PM.

Norwalk 56, Dubuque Wahlert 41

Norwalk's Alex Dorr turned in 14 of his 23 points in the fourth as the Warriors upended the 3A defending champs from Wahlert, 56-41.

Norwalk hit 16-18 free-throws in the fourth, and 22-27 in the game, as they were able to hold on for the quarterfinal win Tuesday night.

Aiding Dorr for the Warriors was Jacob Peterson finishing with 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Iowa recruit Eric May led Wahlert (18-7) with 16 points and six rebounds.

The Warriors (23-2) are back in action tonight at 8:15PM when they take on Harlan.

Harlan 49, Benton 40

Making their seventh state tournament appearance in the last ten years, Harlan advanced into the 3A semfinals, holding off Benton 49-40.

Harlan was able to frustrate a usually sound Benton offense, allowing them to make just 14-42 (33%) field goal attempts.

The Cyclones were led by Jacob Schaben's 13 points and nine rebounds. Zach Twedt led Benton (19-6) with 15 points Wednesday afternoon .

Harlan (23-2) will take on Norwalk in tonight's semifinal at 8:15PM.
