State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald has a pot o' gold better than the one waiting at the end of the rainbow to give back to Iowans. He has a vault brimming full of unclaimed property to be reclaimed. In the true spirit of St. Patrick's Day, State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is looking for Iowans who may have the Luck O' the Irish.
Treasurer Fitzgerald encourages all Iowa residents, past and current, to not wait until they find a four-leafed clover to see if luck is on their side, but to visit the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt website and search for their name. "Our database contains names of individuals and businesses from all over Iowa. We are consistently updating our website," said Fitzgerald. This St. Patrick's Day is a day of possibility for finding and receiving some green back as well. Currently on the list, there are a couple of Lucky's, a few dozen Irish, a Lucky Lady Lounge of Spencer, a Lucky Strike Lanes in Bettendorf and a Shamrock Motel in Spirit Lake.
Currently, the database contains more than 665,000 accounts for individuals from all over the state that have, for whatever reason, lost track of their property. To date, over $94 million has been returned to more than 280,000 Iowans. "Our goal is to keep reminding people to check their names for any unclaimed property," stated Fitzgerald.
Unclaimed property in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt can be forgotten or inactive savings/checking accounts, utility refunds or deposits, uncashed insurance benefit checks, lost stock and dividends or abandoned safe deposit box contents. When individuals do not respond over an extended period of time through regular mailings from banks and corporations, the property is reported to the State Treasurer's Office.
