There will be a Farmer's Market in Storm Lake this summer after all.
When no one stepped forward to manage the program, former leader JoAnn Olsen agreed to come out of retirement to supervise and do the paperwork for the markets for one more year.
Because she may be unable to attend every event, Olsen said she would welcome other volunteers to help, including vendors.
There will be 28 market events held in 2009, down one from last year. The first market will be held June 20.
"We had a very successful market last year and will look forward to an even better 2009," Olsen said.
"We are always looking for new vendors. People can call me if they care interested at 732-1285 and I will answer their questions and provide rules and a contract form," Olsen said. Contracts are also available at the Chamber of Commerce office.
For those who would like to see garden goods and other produce, Olsen recommends being certified for WIC - The Women, Infants and Children program - and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. These are efforts to make sure people in need have access to nutritious foods, which they can purchase at the Storm Lake market with special checks. Vendors who take part in training can accept the checks. The next area training session is Thursday, April 23, 2-4 p.m. at Spencer Public Library. Call 515-281-3632 for a reservation, or contact Olsen for other training opportunities.
