STORM LAKE - After being a part of five championship titles during the Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, Buena Vista senior Eric Bertelsen has been named the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week, for the period ending February 28. This marks the second time he's earned the honor this season.
Bertelsen took home the gold in two events on Friday, as he won the long jump and anchored the 4x200 meter relay. His jump of 7.69 meters (25'2.75"), which extended his DIII leading mark and won the event by over two feet, set both a school and IIAC Indoor record, and is now just .01 meters from tying the all-time NCAA Indoor record of 7.70 meters.
In the 4x200, the team came in with the top time in the conference this season and would live up to that standing as it won the event in a time of 1:29.22, which also set a new school record.
The senior then finished out the Championships by sweeping all three sprint races on Saturday - 55 meter dash (6.36 seconds), 200 meter dash (21.82 seconds) and 400 meter dash (49.83 seconds). His time in the 55 earned him an automatic qualification into the NCAA Championships and also set both a school and IIAC record, while his 200 meter dash time also set both school and IIAC records.
His sixth and final event was the 4x400 meter relay in which the Beavers took seventh (3:33.43).
Bertelsen, who was also named the Men's Most Valuable Athlete for the Championships, became the first individual to sweep the three sprint races during the IIAC Championships since Steve Bubb of Wartburg did so back in 2003.
Bertelsen is now off to the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, Ind. on March 13-14 where he will take part in the long jump and 55 meter dash.
