AGWSR 40, New London 29
A pair of unbeatens squared off in the opening round of the Class 1A girl's state tournament action with #3 AGWSR and their top-ranked defense leading the Cougars over #6 New London, 40-29.
Macy Ubben led the Cougars offensively, netting 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Cassidey Ringena and Jessica McDowell added nine points apiece.
The Tigers were led by Ashley Blint's 12 points. New London finishes the season at 25-1.
Meanwhile, AGWSR improved to 24-0 and advanced to Wednesday's semifinal where they will face George-Little Rock.
George-Little Rock 65, Mason City Newman 53
10th-ranked George-Little Rock outscored Mason City Newman 17-6 in the opening quarter and would not look back as they held off the Knights 65-53.
Shelby Nagel paved the way for the Mustangs, scoring 25 points and pulling down 10 boards to help GLR improve to 23-3. Abbie Voss added 9 points, six boards, and five steals.
The Knights were led by Holly Hinderman's 21 points.
Newman, who upset #2 Newell-Fonda to make the tournament, finishes the season at 19-5.
George-Little Rock meets AGWSR Wednesday night at 6:30PM.
North Butler 40, Coon Rapids-Bayard 39
Fifth-ranked North Butler overcame a 10-point Coon Rapids-Bayard lead to move one game closer to their third state title in four years, having won the 2A crown in 2006 and 2007.
Bobbi Boomgarden scored ten points to lead the Bearcats, as did Carly Jabobs.
Coon Rapids-Bayard led by ten points midway through the second quarter of play, but they then went on a field goal drought of nearly 15 minutes to allow North Butler to take the lead.
Katie Denlinger led the Crusaders with 11. Mary Halverson added ten.
North Butler (22-1) faces defending Class 1A Champion Springville (25-1) Wednesday night at 6:30PM.
Springville 44, Martensdale-St. Mary's 35
The defending champion Orioles hit seven of ten free-throws in the final minutes to hold off #13 Martensdale.
2008 Class 1A All-Tournament Captain Katie Eiben led top-ranked Springville with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Callie Kloubec added 12 points and 12 boards for t he Orioles.
Springville (25-1) faces North Butler Wednesday night with tip off scheduled for 8PM at Wells Fargo Arena.
Manson-NW Webster 55, Roland Story 53
The second ranked team in Class 2A remained unbeaten on the year as Manson-Northwest Webster was able to conver hit four free throws in the final minute and a half hold off Roland-Story, 55-53.
Semifinalists just last season, the Cougars extended their perfect mark to 26-0 for 2008-2009.
Morgan Troshynski led the undefeated Cougars with 15 points Monday night. Morgan Markert and Christianson both had 12.
Roland-Story ends their season with a final mark of 21-5.
Maddie Oliver led all scorers with 17 points. Nicole Strasko and Mackenzie Neely both added 11 for Roland Story.
