The entire Buena Vista County Court system will see many closures during the remaining fiscal year which ends on June 30. The closures on March 20, Apr. 10 and 24, May 8 and 22, June 5 and 19 are due to fiscal constraints in the Iowa Judicial District with the prospect of a de-appropriation of funds previously approved by the Iowa legislature for the current fiscal year. In anticipation of the potential de-appropriation, the court system has undertaken a variety of measures to help lower expenditures for the remainder of the fiscal year. On Feb. 26, 2009 the Iowa House of Representatives approved a $3.8 million reduction in the Judicial Branch operating budget for FY 2009. BV County Clerk of Court Joanne Kinnetz says the number of closures for this year came as a somewhat of a suprise to BV County Court staff and says they weren't anticipating this many closure dates during this fiscal year, she says she's not sure what's around the corner for the next fiscal year. All court staff, with the exemption of Judges and Magistrates, will have unpaid leave on the closure days and no hearings will be held. In addition to the closures the Clerk of Court office will also be closed to the public after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to allow staff to get caught up on work built up due to closure dates. Kinnetz says this will be an inconvenience for many of their customers who come in to pay their bills after they get off work around 3 p.m. Bill payments can be sent via mail to BV County Clerk of Court P.O. Box 1186, Storm Lake, IA or can be paid online at www.iowacourts.gov and click on the 'pay online,' link.
