BVU challenges students to 'Walk a mile in my shoes'

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Buena Vista University will host a unique poverty simulation event March 13. Called, "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," it will attempt to share a bit of the emotion felt by those in need.

The ACES event will be held 3-6 p.m. in Dows Conference Center. Anyone who would like to participate must RSVP in advance to schoenings@bvu.edu.

The event is designed to share:* What is it like to be a single parent?

* What is life like for a child living in poverty?

* How does it feel to not have money to feed your children and pay your bills?

* How would you react if you were in this situation?

* How can you help?

Participants will be split into families, given a budget and go about "living" in a community; paying bills, navigating services, illness and life challenges in a real world simulation.

Buena Vista University is providing the sponsorship for the event, which has been designed by Iowa State University Extension.
