Updates from the Storm Lake Police Department and the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office.

Fight at middle school leads to charges on two juveniles

On Friday, Feb. 20, at approximately 8:10 am the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the Storm Lake Middle School in reference to a fight.

Upon arrival of police they were advised that a fight had just occurred between a 12 year old male of Storm Lake and a 14 year old male of Storm Lake in the school. The fight had been broken up and the students were escorted to the administrative offices.

Police investigated the incident and subsequently charged both juveniles with Disorderly Conduct. Police processed the two juveniles and released them to their parents pending a court date.

Both juveniles sustained minor injuries in the fight.

The case has been forwarded to the Juvenile Court Authority.

Disturbance call leads to three arrests and six charges

On Sunday, Feb. 22, at approximately 7:55 pm. the Storm Lake Police were called to 802 W 6th St. #3 in regards to a male subject that was causing a disturbance.

Upon arrival Officers determined that a male subject had been drinking in the apartment. The man allegedly became angry and assaulted another man inside the apartment with a beer bottle. The suspect then damaged items inside the residence including a table which was broken when he threw it. The man then fled the apartment and was last seen running into 802 W 6th St #4.

Police secured both apartments and located the suspect hiding in a bathroom in apartment #4. Police further observed marijuana in plain view inside of apartment #4.

Police arrested the following:

Michael Gibson, age 43 of Storm Lake, was charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Aggravated Misdemeanor, and Criminal Mischief, simple misdemeanor. He was booked and held on a $2,300 bond.

Steve Traylor, age 52 of Storm Lake, was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Offense, Class D Felony, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Simple Misdemeanor. He was booked and held on a $5,300 bond.

Christine Williams, age 44 Of Storm Lake, was charged wtih Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Offense, Class D Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Simple Misdemeanor. She was booked and held on a $5,300 bond.

SL man arrested after starting fight

On Sunday, Feb. 22, at approximately 2:21 am Storm Lake Police were called to 401 Cayuga in regards to a man causing a disturbance on the 1st floor.

Upon arrival officers located the suspect who had fled to the 3rd floor. Officers learned that the man had allegedly tried to start a fight with occupants in one of the 1st floor apartments. Police arrested the following:

Eugene Powell, age 45 of SL was charged with Public Intox, simple misdemeanor, and Disorderly Conduct, simple misdemeanor. He was booked and held on a $600 bond.

Fight at Malarky's lands two in jail

On Sunday, Feb. 22, at approximately 1:42 am Storm Lake Police Officers were at Malarky's, 147 Flindt Dr, conducting a bar check when they saw a subject attempting to start a fight.

When police made contact with the subject he provided them with a forged state of Nebraska ID card. Police arrested the following:

Raul Sanchez-Mendez, age 23 of South Sioux City, Neb. for Public Intoxication, Simple Misdemeanor, Disorderly Conduct, Simple Misdemeanor, and Unlawful Use of an ID Card, Simple Misdemeanor. He was booked and held on a $900 bond.

Jorge Aguirre, age 20 of Sioux City, was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Simple Misdemeanor. He was booked and held on $300 bond.

Cherokee woman arrested after assaulting another at Malarky's

On Sunday, Feb. 22, at approximately 1:00 am Storm Lake Police were called to Malarky's, 147 Flindt Dr, in regards to an assault.

Upon arrival Officers learned that one female had allegedly assaulted another by punching her in the face. Police arrested the following:

Cassandra Mingus, age 21 of Cherokee, was charged with Assault, simple misdemeanor and was booked and held on $300 bond.

SL man arrested after dropping marijuana at Hy-Vee

On Sunday, Feb. 22, at approximately 12:02 am Storm Lake Police responded to Hy-Vee in regards to a report of a customer dropping a bag of marijuana on the ground. The man who had allegedly dropped the bag picked it up and placed it back into his pocket.

Police located the man in the store and seized a bag of marijuana from his person. Police arrested the following:

Donald Sherman, age 41 of SL was charged with Possession of Marijuana 3rd Offense, Aggravated Misdemeanor and was booked and held on $2,000 bond.

Gilmore City man arrested after causing vehicle damage in Malarky's parking lot

On Saturday, Feb. 21, at approximately 2:00 am Storm Lake Police Officers were flagged down in the Malarky's parking lot, 147 Flindt Dr, in regards to an intoxicated male that had broken the mirror off of a parked car.

Police located the suspect on scene and arrested the following:

Gregory Smith, age 25 of Gilmore City was charged with Criminal Mischief, Simple misdemeanor, and Public intox, simple misdemeanor. He was booked and held on $600 bond.

Police also arrested the following on scene: Brad Benjamin, age 25 of Humboldt. He was charged with Public intox, simple misdemeanor.

Suspicious person call leads to arrest

On Friday, Feb. 20, at approximately 11:03 pm Storm Lake Police were called to the area of 523 Russell St. in regards to a suspicious person. Upon arrival officers located a person walking in the area. Police made contact with the man and determined that he was in possession of a marijuana pipe. Police arrested the following:

Sarin Meas, age 27, of Storm Lake was charged with Possession of drug paraphernalia, simple misdemeanor. He was booked and held on a $300 bond.

SL man arrested after striking home with vehicle

On Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at approximately 12:23 pm the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the area of West 6th Street and Ontario Street in reference to a reckless driver.

Responding officers were further advised that a brown Ford pick up truck had driven over the curb in the in the 300 block of West 6th Street and struck a house located at 312 West 6th Street. The vehicle then fled the scene and drove to Michigan Street and parked in front of the Am Vets Club.

Upon arrival of police they met with witnesses and located the driver of the truck inside of Am Vets. Police identified the driver as Melbin Jiminez, age 22 of Storm Lake. Police allege that Jiminez was intoxicated and took him into custody.

Jiminez was transported to the Buena Vista County Jail where following an investigation Storm Lake Police filed several charges. Upon arrival of Jiminez at the jail he resisted officers and was subdued.

Police charged Jiminez with Public Intoxication, Interference With Official Acts, Reckless Driving, and Striking a Fixed Object. He was booked into the county jail on a $300.00 cash bond.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to the house is estimated at $300.00.
