The Buena Vista indoor track and field teams wrapped up its final competition prior to the IIAC Championships, by taking part in the UNI Dome Open on Friday.
CEDAR FALLS - The Buena Vista indoor track and field teams wrapped up its final competition prior to the IIAC Championships, by taking part in the UNI Dome Open on Friday.
Several personal bests and even a few school records were set throughout the day from both teams. Trish Hogrefe set a personal best time in the women's 60 meter dash, crossing the finish line during the preliminaries in 8.32 seconds, bettering her previous best time of 8.65 seconds. Natalie Olorundami, who was running in the 200 for the first time this season, finished seventh in the event with a time of 27.06 seconds. Bre Platt (Waterloo, Iowa/West High) ran her fastest time of the year in the mile run for BVU by 12 seconds. Olorundami also took fourth in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.10 seconds.
In the field events, Hogrefe took 11th in the long jump (5.01m), while Molly Kruse recorded her best jump of the year 4.58 meters. Sophomore Morgan Darrow's mark of 12.94 in the shot put placed fourth.
Over on the men's side, the only victory by BVU on the day came from Eric Bertelsen, who won the 60 meter dash in 6.93 seconds, improving upon his school record of 6.94 set earlier this season. Bertelsen also finished second in the 200 meter dash with a school record time of 21.89. He missed the title by only .06 seconds. Finally, he placed second in the long jump in 7.49m. Fellow senior Shawn Olorundami took eighth in the 200, but did run a season-best time of 22.62 seconds. He also finished third in the 60 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.22 seconds. Finally, he took 10th in the 400 meter dash, but again ran his fastest time of the season, 51.58 seconds.
Junior Tanner Russ captured seventh in the hurdles in 8.66 seconds, while Justin Bauer took 11th in the 60 meter dash with his fastest clocking of the year in 7.20 seconds. Jonathan Gerster shaved 14 seconds off of his 3,000 meter run time from the Wartburg Select meet to set a season-best time in the event on Friday.
In the field events, junior Steven Ricke finished eighth in the shot put (13.77m), while also taking the same finish in the weight throw with his best toss of the year by .16 meters (14.15m). Brandon Robinson was right behind Ricke in the weight throw, taking 11th in 12.88 meters.
No team score was kept during the meet. Central College was the only other Iowa Conference school competing in the field, which also included Division I schools such as UNI, Drake, and Iowa State, as well as junior colleges such as Iowa Central, Iowa Western, and North Iowa Area Community College.
The teams will now gear up for the IIAC Indoor Championships which get underway next Friday at Wartburg College, before wrapping up on Saturday.
