DECORAH - The Buena Vista men's basketball team sank six straight free-throws over the final 18 seconds and hung on against Luther College on Saturday afternoon, topping the Norse on the road, 69-61.
Senior Andre Wagner led three Beavers in double figures with 15 points, as fellow seniors Matt Cleveland and Jon Millea chipped in with 13 and 10, respectively. Wagner has moved passed the 1,500-point mark in his career and now has 1,505. Cleveland was solid on the defensive end as well, pulling in a game-high nine rebounds, to go along with two steals and one block.
The Beavers came out and shot just 33 percent from the field in the first half, but did lead for the majority of the period and took a slim 24-22 lead into the break.
It was a much stronger offensive output for the team in the second half, shooting 60.7 percent. It came out of the gate and used a 13-3 run to begin the half and go up 14 four minutes in. It maintained the lead and later increased it to 16 at the 9:44 mark.
Luther, however, made the game interesting by going on a 20-6 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes, to get back to within 59-57 with 2:07 left.
Kyle Stribe, who turned in eight points in the contest, hit a jumper on BVU's next possession to put the team back up four, and Luther never got any closer from there.
The Beavers close the regular season out at 23-2 overall (15-1 IIAC). It marks the highest conference win total since it finished 16-2 back in 2002-03. It's also just the second time the team has finished with just one conference loss under Coach Van Haaften.
The team returns to action again next Thursday night when it will face the winner of Wartburg/Dubuque during the semifinal round of the Iowa Conference Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
