CHARTER OAK - The Aurelia boys' basketball team couldn't hold on to an early lead as they fell to Charter Oak-Ute in their regular season finale Friday, 75-73.
The Bulldogs led 20-16 after one and 30-29 at the half but couldn't hold on to the advantage in the second half, despite scoring 29 in the fourth.
"The difference tonight was our defense," said Aurelia head coach Grant Peckenschneider. "The boys just did not move well and rotate and cut off dribble drive. We let them penetrate way to easy and that, of course, opens up everything."
The Bulldogs skipper was not happy with the let down after Aurelia had nearly knocked off a ranked Clay Central-Everly team just days earlier.
"Allowing 58 to 19-2 team few days before and then allowing 75 tonight is disappointing," he said. "We must play better defense Thursday against CCE or we will be in store for a long evening."
Aaron Bruce led Aurelia with 24 points on the night while also grabbing seven boards. Camrin Meyer notched a double-double, scoring 18 to go with 10 rebounds. Nick Hirshman added 14 and six, and Jordan Glawe was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 12 and eight boards.
Aurelia shot well, hitting 28-59(47%), but just couldn't get the stops when needed.
The rematch with 7th-ranked CCE will be in Everly Thursday night, tipping-off at 7PM.
