SPENCER - Paced by first place finishes from Jorge Hernandez (285) and Patrick Higgins (140) and second place finishes from Gabrial Torres (112) and Chris Rios (125), the Storm Lake wrestling team took home a fourth place finish in the Lakes Conference Tournament Friday night.
Spencer claimed first with four first place and four second place finishes to pick up 243 points. Sheldon finished second with 191, Emmetsburg was third with 190.5, and Storm Lake fourth at 176.
"Overall, we were very pleased with our performance," said Storm Lake head coach Ty Seaman. "To place all 13 kids was great. There are always two or three matches you would like to do over, but overall, our kids did a good job. It was great to have Patrick and Jorge finish as conference champs. They both wrestled well."
En route to his conference championship, Higgins pinned Spirit Lake's Scott Hummel in just 15 seconds, he picked up a 12-4 major decision over Estherville's Seth Shatto, and finished with a 6-1 decision over Spencer's Tyler Schaefer in the final. Hernandez picked up pins over LeMars' Jose Camarena and Sheldon's Joe Feekes before picking up a 1-0 decision over Emmetsburg's Taylor Morris.
Tony Pertzborn (171) and Ben Seaman (160) earned third places finishes for the Tornadoes.
Storm Lake is back on the mats tonight as they head to Sac City for dual action with Alta, AGHSC, and East Sac. Matches begin at 6PM.
