Cyclones take fourth at L-M Tournament

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

LAURENS - The Alta wrestling team turned in an impressive effort as they earned a fourth place finish at the Laurens-Marathon Tournament Saturday.

119-pounder Josh Kristensen shined for the Cyclones, earning a first place finish highlighted by a pin over Graettinger-Terril's James Tatman in the finals with just 30 seconds remaining. Tatman was previously unbeaten on the season and had spent the entire season ranked in the 103 and 112 pound weight classes. Kristensen earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors for his efforts Saturday and is undefeated since moving up to the varsity level.

Marcus Alafa topped teammate Jordan Schmitz 24-15 to take top honors at 130 pounds, and Matt Sefcik also took home first after a 4-2 decision over Bryce Jenson at 215. Ross Parcel (125) took second place, and Ernesto Dominguez (103), Josh Sager (112), and Taylor Stevicks (135) all earned third place finishes.

Twin River Valley earned the top team honors, edging second place Graettinger-Terril. Pocahontas finished in third and Alta fourth.

The Cyclones are back in action tonight, facing Storm Lake, AGHSC, and East Sac in dual action at Lake View. Matches begin at 6PM.
