NEWELL - Another day, another thirty-point win for the second-ranked Newell-Fonda girls basketball team. The stingy Mustang defense held Alta to just 16 of 58 (28%) shooting while holding a commanding 44-28 rebounding advantage as they topped the Cyclones, 79-49.
N-F continues to fire on all cylinders as they're steamrolling their way towards another run at the state title. Cheyanne Anderson led four different Mustang girls in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds. Karina Overgaard turned in 13 points and five rebounds, Lauren Devereaux added 12 and five, and Becky Seivert chipped in with 11 points.
"I was very impressed with the way our girl's came out and really got after Alta," said Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers. "We did a nice job of working the ball around on offense and finding the open scorers. We again had good balanced scoring."
The only blemish on the Mustangs' record (14-1, 9-0 NW Conf.) remains the loss to Manson NW Webster before the holiday break. The N-F girls have a favorable remaining schedule and could very will finish with just the one loss if they're able to get by East Sac tonight.
Alta's Jordan Henningsen led all scorers with a 16-point, four assist effort Tuesday. Haley Payne added ten points, Emily Grieme six, and Bridget Murillo added four points to go with six rebounds and three assists.
The loss snapped Alta's three-game win streak as they've climbed into sole possession of third in the conference race. The Cyclones (7-7, 6-4 NW Conf.) have a non-conference matchup with #2 Manson NW Webster tonight in Alta. Both they and the Mustangs tip off at 6PM.
