Buena Vista County Supervisors opened three bids for potential purchase of the county's care facility site Tuesday - one of which could potentially put the site back in business as a care facility.
A $10,000 bid for what is currently the Spectra mental health care site was made by Shane and Nancy Lenhart who own land near the property, a $10,000 bid from Linda Walker and a $30,000 bid from James Walker. According to Chairman Paul Merten bidders James and Linda Walker are possibly interested in keeping the site operating as a residential care facility.
Merten said the couple expressed some serious interest in the facility and possibly retaining some of the patients still at the site.
"He seemed knowledgable about the business," added Supervisor Dale Arends. Spectra Administrator Sue Morrow said the residents at the facility have all been referred to other facilities with many of them accepted to another facility and some have already moved. Morrow says since Spectra is closing in February, if Walker wants to re-open the facility as a residential care facility, it will need to be re-opened as a new facility and pass inspection criteria established by the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals and the State Fire Marshal's office. The Supervisors told Morrow the Walkers were requesting a walk through tour of the facility. The Supervisors took no action on the bids on Tuesday but say they are planning to have further discussion with bidders.
