GALVA - A fermentation tank at Quad County Corn Processors near Galva was placed out of service, Friday, after a malfunction occurred with a vaccum breaker on the tank. The malfunction occurred after the tank was emptied and flexing in the tank occurred causing "significant," damage to the tank which is one of five fermentation tanks at the plant, says Mike Jerke, General Manager at the facility.
According to Jerke, no one was injured and there was no release of product to the environment. Staff responded appropriately to the incident which was not caused by operator error, Jerke stated. As a result, impact was minimized and production will continue virtually uninterrupted. The plant also expects to continue to receive corn. Production had already been slowed at the plant due to economic circumstances.
Quad County Corn Processors staff and representatives of the company's insurance carriers continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
