When MacKenzie Johnson of Laurens learned of a need for a hair salon in Albert City, she says she decided to give it a try. The young Laurens native opened her first salon- MJ's Creations in a Main Street building owned by Mike Behrens- last September. Behrens said the salon had formerly been home to "Hairy's Place," another beauty salon but had closed. With the chairs and mirrors still in place, he says it just needed a new stylist so he contacted Johnson.
Johnson was born and raised in Laurens and graduated from Laurens-Marathon High School in 2005. She attended La'James Beauty School in Cedar Falls and graduated in 2006. "When I got my hair done - I just liked the atmosphere," says Johnson of her decision to pursue a career in hair styling. When her husband Julian, also a native of Laurens, was offered a job in the area, the couple moved back to their home turf. Johnson is the daughter of Rodney and Garthlene Bell, of Laurens. Behrens said Johnson was nominated as number one hairsylist by her La'James graduation class.
Johnson's salon is open three days a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When Johnson isn't styling or cutting hair in downtown Albert City she says she also does some hair cuts and stylings at the Hovenden Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Laurens.
MJ's creations offers coloring, perms, waxing, hair cuts, updos as well as pedicures, manicures and a tanning salon. Walk-ins are welcome.
