Celebrate the women of rural America at the 5th Annual women in Denim conference Jan. 23-24

There is still time to sign up for the 5th Annual Women in Denim Conference, which celebrates the women of rural America, to be held Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24 at Buena Vista University.

The early bird rate of $25 applies until Jan. 15; full fee of $40 will be charged for registrations coming in after Jan. 15.

The cost will include:

* Friday - a health fair (4-6 p.m.) on Friday; dinner meal and the opportunity to listen to key note speaker, Kathy Peterson, Alta, a favorite of Women in Denim attenders; your choice of attending one of five workshops - Update on Breast Cancer, What's in the Farm Bill, Love those Barn Quilts, Look Like a Million Without Spending It or Soup Supreme; and closing the night with dessert and coffee.

* Saturday - Rolls, juice and coffee; the choice of attending five workshops dealing with a variety of topics from fun to serious including marketing issues, the futures market, estate and tax planning, wealth management, farm management, dealing with farm leases, what to and not to wear, dealing with people, dealing with stress, weight management, gardening ideas, how ultraviolet light can cause skin damage, going green, healthy meal preparation, how to use Quickbooks Pro 2008 to benefit business. A panel of attorneys will also be present to take your questions and a group of friends will share their story of why they have been "stitching" together for the past 20 years.

The presenters are some of the very best including Janelle Guericke of Midwest Grain Marketing, Kathy Peterson (keynote speaker) of Peopleworks, Inc., Image consultant and author Jill Swanson, George Moriarty or Iowa Farm Business Association, Master Gardener Kathy Kapitan, dermatologist Dr. Jo Burkhalter, northwest Iowa attorneys, personnel from Security National Wealth Management, ISU Extension specialists Nancy Clark, Kris Williams, Ron Hook, Ann Johanns and Lois Warme.

A lunch, afternoon snacks and a group session with Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Karey Claghron will round out the day.

Vendors will be set up Friday night and Saturday for you to browse at and even make some purchases from.

The Women in Denim Committee will present two awards throughout the event: the Women in Denim Inspirational Award which recognizes the contributions of an individual woman to her family, community and the world of agriculture. Past winners have been women who have farmed locallly for many years to nationally-recognized heroines and the Spirit of Women in Denim Award which recognizes a company, organization or individual that supports and acknowledges the contributions women make to rural life.

Nominations are still being taken for the Women in Denim Inspiration Award.

New to the conference is the opportunity to participate in a special service project to help others. "As women, we help others everyday and we wanted to make that a hallmark of our conference," said the Women in Denim Committee.

The local CAASA shelter for domestic violence victims will be assisted with the donation of much needed items.

The committee is asking anyone who is willing to participate to bring a donation on Friday night. Items needed include: paper towels, storage and Ziploc bags, toilet paper, deodorant, feminie products, tooth paste and brushes, hair care products, tissues, baby diapers and wipes, aluminium foil, dish cloths and towels, batteries of all sizes, coffee, laundry detergent, dish soap, dryer sheets, sponges, disinfectant spray, cleaning products, packages of new underwear (any size from child to adult) and packages of new socks.

the women in Denim Committee is challenging everyone to take part. "Let's see if we can fill the collection box for these victims who often come to the shelter with nothing but the clothes they are wearing."
