MT. VERNON - The Buena Vista women's basketball team got the 2009 portion of its schedule off to a good start by picking up a 60-48 road victory at Cornell College (5-6, 0-3 IIAC) on Wednesday night.
Junior Margo Muhlbauer was the only Beaver to score in double figures, as she turned in 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Senior Katie Ebel followed with nine points, including a pair of three-pointers, while Katie Ernst and Melissa Sporrer each came off the bench to chip in with eight. Sporrer also hauled in a team-high five rebounds, with five others grabbing four. As a team, the Beavers out-rebounded the Rams, 43-33.
Defensively, the 48 points allowed by BVU was a season-low, as the team held Cornell to just 33 percent shooting overall.
BVU, which improved to 8-0 this season when leading at the half, held its largest lead of 16 as late as the 2:33 mark, and also helped secure Coach Berry's 270th career victory in the process.
Buena Vista improves to 9-3 overall (2-1 IIAC) and will now look to make it three straight conference wins when the team hosts Central College on Saturday afternoon inside of Siebens Fieldhouse. Tip-off between the two teams is set for 2:00 p.m.
