Lorraine D. Galvin

Lorraine D. Galvin, age 79, of Alta, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
A memorial service for Mrs. Galvin was held on Friday, Jan. 2, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Interment was a private family graveside service. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
Lorraine Darlene Merideth was born May 7, 1929 in Sundance, Wyo., the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Aldrich) Meredith.
Lorraine attended Spring Center country school near Peterson, for four years, then went on to Larabee Consolidated School in Larrabee, from which she graduated in 1947.
Lorraine was employed at the J. C. Penney store in Cherokee, shortly after she graduated. She then worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Hospital as a secretary in the business office. She was employed at Farmers National Bank for a time, and then at Mello-Dent Seed Company north of Alta until she retired.
Lorraine was married to Paul B. Galvin on Oct. 14, 1950 in Cherokee. The couple was blessed with two children: a son, Terry, and a daughter, Tangy.
Lorraine is a baptized member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Restored Cherokee branch. Lorraine enjoyed working in the church.
She was an animal lover, and she enjoyed gardening and canning the bounty she grew. She held a deep appreciation for all the beauty of God's creation.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren held a special place in Lorraine's heart. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Lorraine is survived by her son, Terry Galvin of Alta; her daughter, Tangy Mack, and her husband, Bill, of Storm Lake; three grandchildren: Mandy Rydberg, Kelly Rydberg and Nicole Jewell; three great-grandchildren: Jadyn, Mackenzie and Bryson; her sister, Maxine Magnussen; her brother, Ralph Merideth and his wife, Arbie; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters.
Joanne Mary Huseman

Joanne Mary Huseman, age 72, of Newell, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.
Funeral services were on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial was in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell was in charge of the arrangements.
Joanne Mary Hiller was born May 18, 1936 to Edward and Mildred (Pien) Hiller in Flandreau, S.D., which is where she was baptized in the Catholic Church. She graduated in 1954 from high school in Flandreau.
Joanne came to Albert City, to help her cousin Betty Jean babysit her children where, through her cousin Marvin Bauer, she met Donald Huseman. On Dec. 2, 1956, Joanne and Donald were married at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell, where Joanne became a member and was confirmed. The couple was blessed with four children: Sheryl, Dar, Susan and Dean.
When first married they lived by Albert City, moved to a farm near Varina, and then to the Ed Porath farm outside of Newell. They moved to town in 1981. Over the years, Joanne helped Don with planting, harvesting, gardening along with being a housewife and mother. She was hauling corn or beans into town when she found a house for sale. This is the house she lived in until her death.
Joanne loved to play cards and belonged to a ladies' card club. She and two very good friends, Connie Taylor of Newell and Diane Stearns of North Bend, Neb., learned to can together. Joanne loved to garden, cook, bake, and can fruits and vegetables with Don.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Donald; children: Sheryl Johnson, Dar Huseman and wife Tammy, Susan Huseman, Dean Huseman and wife Susan, Colleen Hansen and husband Ryan; grandchildren: Mary Bainbridge and husband Bob, Nichole Johnson and husband John, Joshua, Becky, Brent. Rick, Ronnie, Jessie, Tiffany, Chris, Kelly, Katie, and Josey; in-laws: Marvin and Grace Bauer, and Herb and Anna Huseman; great grandchildren: Arthur, Abby, Wyatt, Peyton, and Clair; her mother, Mildred Hiller; sisters and brothers: Judy and her husband Pete, Janice, Jim and wife Karen, and Jay; sister-in-law, Mary Hiller; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Joanne was preceded in death by her father Edward; her sisters: Beverly and Joyce; her brothers: Johny and Jerry; her mother- and father-in-law Carl and Malinda Huseman; and a sister-in-law, Helen Pranger.
Dale L. Miller

Dale L. Miller, age 81, of Newell, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services for Mr. Miller were held on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at First Congregational Church in Newell. Pastor Greg Baskerville officiated. Burial was in the Newell Cemetery.
The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City was in charge of the arrangements.
Dale Lavone Miller, the son of Clarence and Anna Marie (Kreft) Miller, was born July 27, 1927 in rural Sac county, on a farm between Lytton and Sac City. He received his education in a Calhoun County country school. Dale enjoyed trapping and hunting as a youth.
On Aug. 26, 1947, Dale was united in marriage to Verna Mae Just in Fort Dodge. The couple was blessed with three children: Melvin Dale, Dennis Lynn and Lesa Marie.
Dale spent 60 years of his life working the land, farming until he retired. Verna Mae and Dale worked hand-in-hand in their farming operation. He was a kind and gentle family man and had a heart filled with love. He enjoyed taking the family fishing.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Verna Miller of Newell; son Dennis Miller of Newell; one grandson, Eugene Lynn Miller; two great-grandsons, Anthony and Harrison; sisters-in-law Helene Johnson of Lake City, and Nealma Rix and Donna (LeRoy) Dirks, all of Fonda; brothers-in-law Merlin (Becky) Just of Sac City and Harry Johnson of Pocahontas; many nieces and nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Lesa Marie; his son, Melvin Dale Miller; sisters-in-law Elnora Fitchett and Myrna Johnson; and brothers-in-law: Norvin Just, Loren Just, Allen Johnson, Edward Rix and LeRoy Fitchett.
