Storm Lake officials plan to apply for a grant to help the library celebrate and involve the city's multicultural community.
They are seeking $60,000, the maximum possible amount, in a grant program provided by the International City/County Managment Association. The program is designed to strengthen the relationship between city governments and libraries.
Locally, Library Director Misty Gray says funds would be used to sponsor activities and projects to serve the diverse population of the city - realizing goals for both the library board and as set in the council's recent strategy session.
Various ethnic groups would be highlighted for a month-long saturation in culture, art, music; along with educational events and efforts to share their talents and contributions with the community. A website would feature the stories of people from the various cultures in the community.
The grant would also support diversity training for public and business employees, expand the library collection to better refelect the multicultural community, and promote more interaction and involvements from the different cultures.
