Jeff Janssen (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) came off the bench and turned in a career-high 18 points, on the strength of four three-pointers, as Buena Vista connected on 51.4 percent of its shots from the field, en route to a commanding 97-53 non-conference home victory over Macalester College on Saturday night.
Brian Fogleman (Manning, Iowa/Manning) followed with a season-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Kyle Stribe (Manning, Iowa/Manning) added 13. Doug Bissen (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) also sparked the team off of the bench, scoring a career-best 11 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Despite scoring only six points, Andre Wagner (Omaha, Neb./Northwest) did his part for the Beavers by hauling in seven rebounds and dishing out eight assists.
Macalester held a slim 5-2 lead in the early going before a bucket from Fogleman ignited a 24-6 run over the next 7:30, giving BVU a 26-11 lead midway through the half. The team then extended it to 21 at the break.
The Beavers went on an 11-3 run to up the lead to 62-33 with just more than four minutes gone by in the second half. They maintained that lead until Macalester went on a slight run to get back to within 21 at the 8:49 mark of the contest.
From there, Janssen capped a 22-0 run by BVU with his final three of the night, giving the team a 94-51 lead with just over four minutes to play.
Defensively, the team forced 29 turnovers, while committing just 14, and out-rebounded the Saints 42-40.
Jackson Wright turned in 18 points and six rebounds to lead Macalester.
Buena Vista improves to 4-1 overall and will now open Iowa Conference play on Tuesday night with a key road contest at Simpson College. Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
