Strong shooting leads Buena Vista men's basketball past Dordt 86-66

Buena Vista connected on 54.4 percent of its shots from the field, including 52.2 percent from downtown, as it moved to 3-0 on the season with an 86-66 home victory over visiting Dordt College on Saturday night.

Senior Travis Person came up big for the team in the first half, scoring 12 of his 14 points, as he buried 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

The game see-sawed back-and-forth at the start, as Dordt led by five (20-15) nearly nine minutes in. The Defenders continued to lead at 24-21 before Person buried a three with 8:37 left to help spark a 24-7 run to close out the half.

The second half was much of the same as the Beavers, after shooting 51 percent in the first half, connected on 58 percent in the second. BVU would finish the game connecting on14-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Dordt cut the lead down to eight (50-42), but Buena Vista then got a pair of buckets from Brian Fogleman, as well as a three-pointer from Matt Cleveland, to go back up by 15. It then increased the lead to 20 with 12:32 to play, and Dordt was unable to get any closer than 18 the rest of the way.

Andre Wagner, who connected on 4-of-9 long range attempts, poured in a season-high 22 points to lead the way for the Beavers. Fogleman and Cleveland followed with 13 points apiece, while Fogleman also chipped in with nine rebounds and four steals. Eleven different Beavers scored in the contest.

Defensively, Buena Vista forced 25 turnovers, while committing just 17.

Logan Kingma led Dordt with 24 points.

The eighth-ranked Beavers improve to 3-0 overall and will have a few days off before returning to the road for a key non-conference JV/V road contest at Gustavus Adolphus on Tuesday night. with the varsity to begin at 7:30 p.m.
