LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Despite having at least four players in double figures for the third straight game, the Buena Vista women's basketball came up just short in the championship game of the Lake Forest College Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling to the host Foresters, 73-71.
It was all Foresters to begin the contest as they built a 24-8 lead with just less than eight minutes left in the opening half.
Despite shooting only 32 percent as a team in the first half, including 3-of-11 from downtown, it was a Brittany Gunn three-pointer with 6:11 left that began an 18-4 Beaver run to close out the half and pull the team to within 31-29 heading into the locker room.
The two teams then went back-and-forth over the first 4:30 of the second half before a pair of free-throws from senior Jenn Schumann gave the Beavers their first lead of the game (42-40)at the 15:12 mark.
Lake Forest then went on a 21-12 run over the next five minutes to build its largest lead of the half (7). The Beavers, though, hung tough and a three-pointer by Katie Ebel, who finished with 13 points, cut their deficit to 62-60 with 3:36 left in regulation, but the team just couldn't get over the hump in the end.
The Foresters, who used a 7-of-10 effort at the free-throw line over the final 1:35 of the contest, went up by five with 22 seconds left, and hang on for the two-point win.
The Beavers did regain their shooting touch over the final 20 minutes to finish the contest at 40.7 percent. Senior Margo Muhlbauer turned in a season-high 22 points, on 7-of-18 shooting, to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Schumann and Aubrey Hauswirth chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
BVU again turned in a solid game at the charity stripe, connecting on 20-of-25 attempts, including a combined 13-of-16 effort from Schumann and Muhlbauer.
Claire Schmidt turned in a game-high 25 points to lead Lake Forest (2-0).
Buena Vista dips to 2-1 overall and will return to action on Tuesday night when the team opens its home schedule with a match-up against the University of South Dakota. Tip-off inside of Siebens Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
