Explosion, fire totals Rembrandt building

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Rembrandt fire department responded to a machine shed on fire with reported multiple explosions, Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m.

The fire at the 1228 5th St. site produced flames that could be seen from the Highway 3 and 71 intersection, officers reported.

"The whole shed was fully engulfed (when we arrived)," said Rembrandt Fire Chief Jay Sassman.

Sassman said that a semi-truck in the shed may have been the source of explosions. A propane tank just feet from the flames complicated the response, as Albert City, Truesdale and Sioux Rapids firefighters were called in to assist. Firefighters were on scene for about three hours.

Sassman said the building and contents are a total loss. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
