After topping Southern Cal in four games in the Regional Final, the Schaller-Crestland Wildcats have had a nine day span to prepare for their run at the Class 1A state volleyball title.
The Wildcats (27-7) road to state saw them top Aurelia, close out their season sweep of a rated Alta Cyclones team, sweep a Harris-Lake Park team on a 16 match win streak, and upend the #9 team in the state in Southern Cal.
All season, the Wildcats strength at the net has been too much for most teams to contend with.
Five different Schaller-Crestland girls have eclipsed the 100-kill mark this season, and four have 35 or more blocks.
Add in the fact that the Wildcats serve at 91% as a team and they are certainly capable of making some noise at the tournament.
Schaller-Crestland didn't start receiving statewide attention until the third volleyball rankings appeared where they made their debut at #11. They reached as high as eighth in the polls and finished at #11.
The AGWSR Cougars, on the other hand, has spent nearly the entire season in the fourth rated position as their record has progressed to 35 wins and four losses heading into today's match. En route to their state appearance AGWSR swept Northeast Hamilton, SE Webster Grand, Iowa Christian Academy (20-8), and made relatively easy work of #2 Don Bosco (29-4) in four games.
The Cougars' Macy Ubben leads the senior-laden squad in kills, hitting efficiency, digs, and blocks while starting every game this season.
The same four seniors and one junior have started every match for the Cougars this season.
Needless to say, both teams paths have been difficult, and both berths are well-deserved as the battled-tested Wildcats and Cougars prepare battle it out on the court.
Games between the two begin at 2:15 PM on court one at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
The winner of Thursday's matchup advances to Friday night's semifinal to take on the winner of New London and Grandview Park Baptist. Semifinal to be held at 6PM on court one.
