All-Area First Team

Andrew Allerdings

- Senior - Alta

The senior anchored the Alta front five that sprang its' backs for 2968 rushing yards and 41 TDs this fall. At 6'2", 275 pounds, Allerdings paved the way for the Cyclones' quarterfinal run in the playoffs.

Michael Huseman

- Senior - Alta

A threat to score anytime he touched the ball this season, Huseman totaled 17TDs in 2008. A versatile threat, the senior had 754 rushing yards, 322 receiving yards, 324 punt returns yards, and 98 kick return yards. Explosive on the defensive end as well, he made 31 stops and seven interceptions, tops in Class A.

Jack Mills

- Senior - Alta

Mills was a human highlight reel for Alta in 2008. His 1428 rushing yards were sixth best in Class A and his 21 rushing scores ranked third. The senior also threw for a touchdown, had 97 receiving yards, averaged 26 yards per kickoff return with a score. Mills was also a key contributor to a stiff Cyclone defense with 49 tackles at linebacker.

Schuyler Radke

- Junior - Alta

Radke bounced back in a big way after an injury shortened 2007 season. The junior was second on the team with 83 tackles at linebacker. He also ran for 336 yards and three scores while providing consistent blocking for Alta's talented tailback duo.

Austin Stille

- Senior - Alta

The standout linebacker helped the Cyclones hold opponents to just over 11 points per game. Still managed 106 tackles and two INTs in 2008 while also providing excellent blocking at the tight end position

Jake Syndergaard

- Senior - Alta

Transitioned from fullback to tackle following the loss to LeMars Gehlen, and the Cyclones began their five game tear thereafter. Created running lanes all season long while also creating havoc defensively. Syndergaard finished with 77 tackles, an INT, and two fumble recoveries at defensive end.

Aaron Bruce

- Senior - Aurelia

Bruce did it all for Aurelia as he rushed, passed, caught, and returned to the tune of 955 all-purpose yards and 13 TDs. Bruce also handled kick-off duties and made 68 stops defensively, 11 for losses.

Anthony

Fowler

- Senior -

Aurelia

A disruptive force on the defensive line, Fowler notched 70 tackles with 14 of them being for losses. The senior was also the Bulldogs biggest receiving threat as he led Aurelia with 31 receptions for 573 yards and seven TDs.

Mark Cronin

- Senior - Buffalo Ridge

Cronin was literally all over the field in 2008 as the linebacker had a remarkable 118 tackles, 104 of which were solo as he was among the top tacklers statewide in all classes. The senior had 11 tackles for losses, one interception, and three fumble recoveries. Cronin was also a starter along the Bison offensive line.

Gary Brechler

- Senior - Laurens-Marathon

The senior racked up 122 tackles for the Chargers' stout defense. Brechler also rumbled for 1077 yards and 16TDs on the ground to help lead Laurens-Marathon to the playoffs in their first year of 8-man football.

Zach Lovin

Senior - Laurens-Marathon

The Chargers' signal caller was one of the most explosive offensive players in this part of the state. Loving completed 58% of his passes while throwing for 1664 yards and 28 TDs. The senior also ran for 153 yards and another 8TDs as L-M was one of 8-mans' most surprising teams.

Tyler Smith

- Senior - Laurens-Marathon

Smith led the Laurens-Marathon defense with 129 stops in 2008, 80 of which were solo efforts. The senior was also a versatile player on the offensive side of the ball with 378 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards, and 8 TDs. Defensively, led the Chargers with four picks.

Adam Woodin

- Senior - Laurens-Marathon

As Lovin's top target this season, Woodin hauled in team highs in receptions (52), yards (743), and touchdowns (12). That production was good enough to place him among the top seven in all three categories as he was one of 8-man's most productive receivers.

Josh Hopper

- Senior Newell-Fonda

The Mustangs' workhorse averaged a stellar 6.4 yards per attempt as he totaled 1151 yards and 15TDs on the ground this fall. A viable receiving threat, the senior added 180 receiving yards and two scores. He was also N-F's top return man averaging 17 yards per kick return and a whopping 29 per punt return with two scores.

Trevor Tiefenthaler

- Senior - Sioux Central

An all-state receiver last year, Tiefenthaler made the move to quarterback in 2008 throwing for 290 yards and running for 904 for 11 total TDs. The Rebels defensive leader made 65 stops and six interceptions.

Bobby Brown

- Junior -

Storm Lake

Brown threw for the 7th highest yardage amount in 3A as he completed 62% of his attempts for 1551 yards and eight scores. The junior was also Storm Lake's second leading rusher and added three scores on the ground.

Courtney Goodchild

- Senior - Storm Lake

The Tornadoes top playmaker hauled in 39 catches for 540 yards and four touchdowns this fall. Goodchild also averaged nearly five and half yards per rush attempt and made four tackles.

Michael McCabe

- Sophomore - Storm Lake

Storm Lake's cleanup man in the secondary, McCabe's 101 tackles were sixth best in the district as just a soph. Also completed 55% of his passes for 221 yards and a score.

Tony Pertzborn

- Senior - Storm Lake

Always a sure-handed option, Pertzborn's 48 grabs were good enough for fourth best in Class 3A. The senior finished with 522 yards and three scores while also making 60 stops defensively.

Eric Smith

- Senior - Storm Lake

The heart and soul of the Storm Lake defense, Smith made 96 stops for the Tornadoes in 2008 in arguably, Class 3A's top district.

All-Area Second Team

Josh Alesch

- Senior - Buffalo Ridge

Alesch was the team's second leading tackler in his final season totaling 62 with eight being for losses. Second on the team in receptions, he hauled in 16 passes for 206 yards and two scores.

Christian Bondinello

- Junior - Buffalo Ridge

The junior lineman started all ten games for the Bison. The 6'2", 295 pound Bondinello did well to open up holes for the ground game offensively. On the defensive side of the ball he made 40 stops, six for losses.

Jacob Howey

- Junior - Aurelia

Howey led the offensive attack as the Bulldogs fell one win shy of the playoffs in 2008. The junior averaged 5.2 yards per rush en route to 961 yards and 13TDs. He also hauled in 14 passes for 151 yards and a score. Defensively Howey made 41 tackles and had two INTs.

Caleb Husman

- Senior - Alta

Another member of the Cyclones dominant offensive line, Huseman helped turn a good running game into an outstanding one this fall. On the defensive line, he made 27 stops.

Caleb Jamison

- Senior - Laurens-Marathon

The other half of the area's most productive receiving duo, all Jamison did this fall was haul in 40 passes(12th highest in 8-man) for 573 yards(16th) and 10TDs (10th). Also had three interceptions.

Tyler Kenny

- Sophomore - Buffalo Ridge

In the Bison's opening season, Kenny averaged just under five yards a carry to lead Buffalo Ridge ground attack. He finished with 673 yards and three TDs on the ground this fall.

Jeff Kofmehl

- Senior - Storm Lake

An anchor of the Tornadoes offensive line, Kofmehl added 40 stops, five for losses, on the defensive side of the ball.

Cameron Manteufel

- Senior - Alta

An overpowering blocker at the tight end position, Manteufel was also a big play threat catching six balls for 145 yards and two scores. On the defensive line, he was constantly in the opposing backfield making 66 stops, nine of which were for losses.

Patrick McAreavy

- Senior - Buffalo Ridge

A jack of all trades for Buffalo Ridge in their first season, McAreavy averaged six yards per rushing attempt, led the team in receptions (31), receiving yards (367), and receiving TDs (5), averaged just under 20 yards per kick return, made 24 tackles, and had two interceptions.

Camrin Meyer

- Senior - Aurelia

Meyer took over signal-caller duties after the season began and finished with 844 yards and 11 TDs through the air. Prior to the position change, he made eight grabs for 1 30 yards and four TDs. On the defensive side of the ball, Meyer had 37 tackles and a team high three interceptions.

Zach Nixon

- Junior - Aurelia

A force on the line for the Bulldogs, Nixon was constantly in the backfield as 16 of his 74 tackles were for a loss. The junior also had two fumble recoveries on the season.

Alec Ohlson

- Senior - Aurelia

Ohlson was second on Aurelia's defense wit 91 tackles in 2008. His three interceptions were also tied for the team lead. The senior also picked up the tough yards on the ground for Aurelia as he finished with 217 yards and five scores.

Mike Ripke

- Junior - Sioux Central

The junior running back averaged 4.5 yards per carry as he totaled just under 700 with four TDs this fall. Ripke's 66 tackles led the Rebel defense.

Matt Sefcik

- Junior - Alta

The Alta guard was part of the stellar front five that plowed the way for 250 rushing yards a game. Sefcik was a force on the defensive front as well as he filled the running lanes and made 28 stops.

Ryan Stumbo

- Senior - Laurens-Marathon

In his senior campaign, Stumbo registered 87 tackles for the Chargers, good enough for third best on the team. He also recovered a fumble and scored a defensive TD.

Cody Wells

- Senior - Newell-Fonda

Wells was a defensive standout for N-F this fall leading the team with 93 tackles and three INSs with one returned for score. Also a receiving threat, the senior made six grabs for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Taylor Witzel

- Junior - Aurelia

In Myron Radke's swarming defense, Witzel led the way for the Bulldogs as he totaled 92 tackles this fall with two for losses and two fumble recoveries.

Honorable mention

Nolan Cone

- Sophomore - Storm Lake

Part of the sophomore class that contributed greatly for the Tornadoes in 2008, Cone registered 63 stops, one interception, and one fumble recovery.

Tyler Gibbins

- Senior - Storm Lake

The reliable senior was always around the ball making 55 stops in 2008 while also making nine grabs for 101 yards.

Nate Reichter

- Senior - Newell-Fonda

Reichter made three interceptions and 31 tackles on a Mustangs defense that helped nab them a playoff berth.

Jack Reis

- Senior - Newell-Fonda

Reis threw for 672 yards and six TDs, ran for 308 and five TDs, and made 62 tackles to help guide the Mustangs to a fourth place finish in one of Class A's toughest districts.

Ryan Vonnahme

- Senior - Alta

The sure tackling senior made 54 stops in 2008. Vonnahme was constantly making big plays for with two interceptions and four fumble recoveries this fall.
