Police ask for help after SL mailbox blast

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Storm Lake Police are hoping that the community can help them to find answers following the detonation of a homemade explosive device Tuesday night.

Shortly before 7 p.m., officers were called to 1207 Poplar Lane on a report of an explosion in a mailbox.

Police determined that a crude homemade explosive device commonly referred to as a "MacGyver Bomb" had been placed in the mailbox at that location and it subsequently detonated. There were no injuries and no damage was reported.

The Storm Lake Police Department warns individuals who may be constructing this type of device that they are very dangerous and have caused property damage in Storm Lake in the past and serious injuries to persons in other parts of the country.

Citizens who may see a suspicious item near a home or mailbox are urged to notify the police immediately. One thing to look for is a plastic bottle that appears to be swelling in size, officers said. If you observe this, call 911 immediately and stay clear of the object.

Anyone with information on this incident should contact police at 712-732-8010.
